Abstract

Purpose : Parents of children with illness may experience anxiety, fear, and frustration as they experience parental role conflicts. Parents are the primary caretakers of their children's health care, so it's important to understand the psychological and physical condition of the parents. The aim of this conceptual analysis is to clarify the conceptual understanding of parental role conflict and to identify empirical references.

Methods: Data were collected up to May 2022 through literature review from OVID-MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, EMBASE, and Cochrane library. For the analysis of the concept, the Walker and Avant method was applied.

Results: Three defining attributes of parental role conflict have been identified: ambiguity of parental role, incongruity of parental role, and difficulty of performing multiple roles as a parent.

Conclusion: The attributes identified through this conceptual analysis can be applied to clinical practice, education, and research to understand parenting roles.
